I'm struggling with my long fairway shots

Fairway Woods

The fairway wood is a difficult club to hit with consistency, but one that is very useful at this time of year when the courses are playing a bit longer following the off season. Being a good fairway wood player will help make those par 5’s a little shorter and possibly give you a few more birdie chances.

At address you should slightly widen your stance, position the ball just inside your left heel with your weight evenly distributed (pic.1). We are hitting a wood to gain yards on the course, so remember to make a full shoulder turn on the backswing (pic.2), if you just want to pop the ball up the fairway you should be using an iron. To hit a crisp well flighted fairway wood it is important that you swing both down and through to a complete finish making sure that your weight ends up fully on your left foot (pic.3). If you hang back and try to lift the ball in the air you will likely hit the ground first or top the ball. Be sure to make a positive swing and you should start to see results.
